LABOR GOVERNMENT DELIVERS KINDERGARTEN UPGRADE BLITZ
Hundreds of Victorian kindergartens are set to increase their playroom sizes, recondition facilities and upgrade their IT hardware, as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s election promise to invest $50 million in the early childhood sector.
Visiting Erinwood Preschool in Frankston today, Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos said over 350 Kindergartens would share in $2.6 million worth of grants to improve services for Victorian families.
Grants of up to $25,000 will allow 58 kindergartens to enlarge their playrooms, giving them flexibility and helping them to better accommodate the improved staff-to-child ratios ahead of their introduction in 2016.
122 kindergartens, including Erinwood Preschool, will receive grants of up to $10,000 to upgrade their playgrounds, improving access for children of all abilities, and undertake refurbishments.
A further 249 kindergartens will receive IT grants of up to $1,500 to purchase new laptops, tablets and other digital hardware to boost digital learning programs and support administrative functions.
These grants form part of the Labor Government’s $50 million investment in the early childhood sector through the building and upgrading of kindergartens and children’s centres across Victoria.
The Labor Government is also providing up to $83.7 million over four years in additional funding to support kindergartens to transition to new staff qualification and ratio requirements.
Families will benefit from improved staff-to-child ratios from 1 January 2016, which will allow more one-on-one time for every child and boost the value they receive from time spent at kindergarten in preparation for school.
