FAIRFIELD CROSSING GETS SAFETY BOOST

The Andrews Labor Government has installed new automatic safety gates at the pedestrian crossing on Station Street in Fairfield, boosting safety for the hundreds of residents and passengers who use it daily.

Member for Northern Metropolitan Region Jenny Mikakos today welcomed the completion of the upgrade, which involved installing emergency exit gates with electromagnetic latches.

The gates will prevent people starting to cross the tracks when a train is coming, and ensure those on the tracks when the warning bells start ringing have a safe way out.

The upgrade has also made the crossing more accessible for people in wheelchairs, motorised scooters and for families with prams, by making entry and exit points wide enough for them.

Upgrade works were carried out and completed between March and April 2018.

With Fairfield Station, shops and schools nearby, we’ve made the crossing safer for the pedestrians and families who need to use it every day.”

“The new automatic safety gates will keep people separated from oncoming trains, so tragic accidents and near misses are much less likely to occur.”
