The number of people using the popular Parkiteer bike cages at railway stations has tripled in the 12 months to April, with almost half of Parkiteer cage users leaving their cars at home and cycling to catch their train.

Each bike cage can store 26 bikes securely in the same place as three individual car spaces and weekly use of the cages in total has increased to almost 1300 people a week up from 400 a week in April 2009. Two new bike stations are under construction at Laverton station and a new cage will also be delivered as part of the $36 million investment for Coolaroo station.

Parkiteer cages are managed by Bicycle Victoria and funded by the Brumby Labor Government.
